Never too old to sing and dance — Residents take center stage in 1950s Variety Show at The Carlisle Naples

Showing you’re never too old to sing and dance, more than 100 residents gathered at The Carlisle Naples recently to enjoy a lively 1950s-themed variety show created, organized and performed entirely by residents.

The production featured 16 performers ranging in age from their 70s to 90s and was months in the making. From selecting songs and coordinating rehearsals to managing technical details, refreshments and emceeing duties, residents handled every aspect of the event themselves.

Led by resident Carol Souers, an 85-year-old pianist who has been playing by ear since childhood, the show featured musical performances, comedy and beloved favorites from the 1950s.

“It was a challenge, but it was so much fun,” said Souers. “Music is universal. Everyone feels better with music.”

For many participants, the experience was about more than putting on a show. It was an opportunity to share talents, build friendships and work together toward a common goal.

“These types of events allow residents to share talents they may have thought they lost,” said resident Natalie Lewis, who served as master of ceremonies. “They strengthen self-confidence, create new friendships and remind people that no matter their age, they still have so much to contribute.”

The performance concluded to enthusiastic applause and plenty of smiles from both performers and audience members alike.

“All in all, we felt like we accomplished something good,” concluded Souers.
