Students join The Carlisle Naples retirees for Mahjong play with 3 generations, Featured in Naples Daily News
Three generations of families came together recently through an centuries-old tradition – Mahjong, a tile game developed in China.
On National Mahjong Day, April 30, students from Community School of Naples and their parents joined residents at The Carlisle Naples, a luxury active retirement community, for a hands-on educational experience.
Mahjong is a 4-player, tile-based game developed in China around the in the mid 1800’s. The game is one of skill, strategy, calculation, and some chance.
At the Community School of Naples – an independent PreK-12 college preparatory day school – Mahjong was recently introduced as an elective.
“Moments like this are what community is all about,” said Amanda Ignasak, Executive Director of The Carlisle Naples. “Bringing together students, their parents and our residents creates a unique opportunity for connection across generations. There’s something incredibly meaningful about watching knowledge, stories and laughter shared from one generation to the next.”
The event – aimed to pair the students and their families with Mahjong players at The Carlisle – was part of an ongoing partnership between the school and retirement community, which includes regular visits and handwritten letter exchanges “that foster meaningful relationships across generations,” the groups said in a press release.
