The fanfare of the Tour de France will come to SRG senior living communities when residents participate in the first annual Tour de Zest. The company-wide cycling initiative is designed to encourage and motivate residents to stay active and engaged.
The 10-day socially distanced challenge begins on June 26 and invites residents at SRG’s 32 communities to cycle their way to better health through spin-style classes and activities. The communities’ creative Zest Directors have planned a variety of programs and events to keep spirits high throughout Tour de Zest. From festive kick-off parties and guest fitness instructors to friendly challenges between resident-teams, Tour de Zest promises something for everyone, regardless of fitness levels.
Cycling has been shown to provide a wealth of health benefits, including increased cardiovascular fitness, improved joint mobility, decreased stress levels and the prevention and management of diseases such as diabetes.
Similar to Tour de France, residents will enjoy scenic backdrops as they “cycle.” Several Zest Directors – charged with catering to residents’ mind, body and soul – will use their GoPro to take residents on virtual rides through the Arizona desert, Pacific Northwest and the California coastline.
The communities’ culinary teams are also joining in the excitement, planning “carb-loading” dinners to keep residents’ energy levels high as they work to improve their health and boost performance levels.
Among the Tour de Zest highlights are:
-
The Chateau on Capitol Avenue: The Sacramento Wheelmen, the largest and most active recreational cycling club in Northern California, will be at the California senior living community to help kick off the event.
-
La Vida Real: Residents at the Rancho San Diego community in California have formed two internal teams to compete against each other for bragging rights. A leadership board will track their accumulated miles to see which team reigns supreme.
-
La Siena: In addition to the Tour de Zest activities, residents at the Phoenix active retirement community will follow along as Brenden McNulty, a local from Arizona, competes in Tour de France for the first time.
-
Maravilla at The Domain: Themed spirit days will encourage residents at the Austin, Texas community to dress the part as they compete in Tour de Zest. “I Love the 80’s,” for example, invites residents to wear neon and “Glow Ride Day” encourages wearing white so they can “glow” during a cycling class incorporating black lights.
In addition to pushing themselves to meet their Tour de Zest fitness goals and competing against neighbors, residents at each community are hoping to outperform participants at sister-communities and take home the overall “SRG Cycling Trophy” for most-accumulated miles.
Senior Resource Group (SRG) has been a leader in providing distinctive retirement living since 1988. SRG develops, owns and operates independent living, assisted living and Alzheimer’s/dementia care communities throughout the United States.
