Often, people believe old age and frailty go hand-in-hand. Studies show quite the contrary! Both psychological and physical aspects of aging are affected by older adults’ activity level. In fact, there is documented evidence from the National University of Singapore that found frailty in seniors can actually be reversed.
At Maravilla Scottsdale, an active retirement community in Arizona, resident Geri Friedman is an example of an older adult who has taken charge of her fitness and ultimately increased her strength.
She had a fall which led to a hospital stay and time in a rehabilitation facility. Determined to get back to an active lifestyle, Mrs. Friedman committed to a plan that would increase her strength and muscle mass. She reviewed Maravilla Scottsdale’s robust fitness calendar and participated in classes where she felt comfortable.
Zumba Gold, a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity, became among her favorite workout classes. She went from seated positions to standing and dancing!
“You have to listen to your body and do what you can,” she said. “I don’t want to lose what I’ve worked so hard for.”
Mrs. Freidman says her desire to maintain her strength, stamina, and balance is what keeps her moving forward. She’s inspired her neighbors and Maravilla Scottsdale staff with her dedication and hard work and has become a profile in fitness.
