The Carlisle Naples, an active retirement community in Southwest Florida, is home nearly 70 resident-veterans. Three of these brave servicemen were recently profiled in the Naples Daily News in honor of Veterans Day.
Ninety four year old Earl Page, a boatswain’s mate in the Navy, told the story of his 48-star American Flag which survived a Pacific typhoon in June 1945 while Gene Engel, 86, recalled his time serving in the Korean War and how he practiced a Low Altitude Bombing System maneuver in a B-57 bomber. William Woo-Lun, 92, was a first lieutenant in the Army and shared his war stories from both World War II and the Korean War.
The gentlemen discussed the camaraderie found among veterans calling The Carlisle home. From being recognized on the Veterans Wall of Honor, a permanent display highlighting residents’ military service to informal gatherings for coffee, the resident-veterans enjoy being with others who have shared experiences.
