Joanne “Grandma” Appleman, a resident at La Vida Real, relishes opportunities to be of service to others and has encouraged her neighbors at the active retirement community to do the same.
She initiated La Vida Real’s “CAN DO” service project, where plastic bottles and aluminum cans are recycled to raise money for Spring Valley Middle School’s special education classes. Mrs. Appleman and fellow residents participate by putting bottles and cans in special receptacles throughout the community which are then delivered weekly to the school.
Students then sort the bottles and cans for recycling. They derive a tremendous sense of purpose and accomplishment form the activity and look forward to the task. Proceeds from the recycling are used to purchase supplies and equipment for their classrooms and schedule special field trips.
In honor of her work with Spring Valley, Mrs. Appleman was the recipient of the Honorary Service Award by the California Parents & Teachers Association.
