In honor of Veterans Day, La Vida Del Mar, our active retirement community in Solana Beach, Calif., held a poignant service honoring the brave service men and women who bravely fought to defend our nation’s freedoms.
The ceremony, now in its 4th year, included Girl Scout Cadets 4613 who called out commands as the community’s new American flag and the Missing in Action (MIA) flag were raised.
Both La Vida Del Mar residents and staff came together for the event. Business Manager Scottie Geno volunteers with the Girl Scout Cadets and wanted to share the community’s veterans’ stories with the youngsters which included her daughter. Sam Gonzalez, a driver at La Vida Del Mar and retired Staff Sargent with the U.S. Marines led the pinning ceremony. Each resident-veteran received a special pin, thanking them for their service. Each year, the pins are different and this year, it was a bald eagle, a symbol chosen by our founding fathers to symbolize strength, courage, freedom and immortality. Sam, who served for in the military for 26 years and was awarded a Purple Heart, relished the opportunity to participate in the program and acknowledge the veterans who came before him.
The band, “Dancing Cloud”, performed a rousing rendition of “Three Soldiers” for veterans and fellow La Vida Del Mar neighbors.
