Carlisle Resident Participates in Collier County Honor Flight

Joe Feldstein, a resident at The Carlisle Naples, recently participated in the Collier County Honor Flight’s Mission 16.

He was accompanied by fellow military veterans and the group toured the monuments built in their honor in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Feldstein was drafted during the Korean War, serving in the Army from 1954-1956. He spent six months in Salzburg, Austria in the Field Artillery Branch before being stationed in Nuremberg, Germany for one year.

“Prior to the military, I dreamt of seeing places in Europe,” said Mr. Feldstein who has lived at the active retirement community for almost 12 months. “I was able to make those dreams come true by being in the military. Among the places I visited were England, Holland, France, Germany and Italy.”

When he was discharged and returned to the United States, he recalls kissing the ground.

“I’ve been to many counties but nothing came close to being back at home in the United States,” he said.

He retired from military life as a Specialist 3^rd Class and earned a medal for sharp shooting and another for his occupation of Germany. He returned to Harvard, graduating with a law degree.

Mr. Feldstein felt the best part of the trip was being with others who also served. He’d always wanted to visit the monuments but was too busy to go.

Now, thanks to The Carlisle’s maintenance-free lifestyle, he felt the time was right to embark on the adventure.

He’s looking to sharing highlights from his trip with neighbors at The Carlisle, including fellow veterans.
