Residents at The Carlisle Naples, an active retirement community in Southwest Florida, recently laced up their boxing gloves to punch out Parkinson’s disease.
The group attended a Rock Steady Boxing class at Title Boxing Club. Started by former Indiana prosecutor Scott Newman after his Parkinson’s diagnosis, the Rock Steady Boxing program has been shown to reduce and improve the symptoms of the disease which affects more than 10 million people worldwide. The footwork, for example, enhances balance; the punching steadied tremors; and the stretching improved stiffness.
The residents—many 80 years and older—were boxing for the first time and found the class fun, high energy and definitely worth attending again! In addition to opportunities to attend the boxing class, The Carlisle Naples offers onsite exercise programs specifically to combat the symptoms of the disease.
The local papers, the Naples Daily News and Florida Weekly, profiled the enthusiastic boxers.
“Like any good sport, you have to do it on a regular basis,” said Carlisle resident Debbie Wiecek. “You get what you put into it.”
The Carlisle offers both Independent and Assisted Living lifestyles. Available on a monthly fee basis, the ECC-licensed and CARF-accredited community boasts a full range of services and amenities including 12-hour restaurant dining, housekeeping, transportation and activities.
